Casablanca Media Publishing now represents the works of legendary singer-songwriter, Roy Orbison, for Canada.

A prolific and timeless songwriter, U2 front man Bono once commented about Roy Orbison, “The thing people don't talk about enough as far as I'm concerned is how innovative this music was, how radical in terms of its songwriting. As I become more interested in songwriting, you hit a wall where Roy Orbison is standing."

Roy Orbison was one of the few established hit-makers from the late 1950s and early 1960s whose popularity rivaled the British Invasion.  He maintained his popularity through music which displayed an extraordinary variety of themes, structure, tempo and rhythm and an authentic, emotional connection that transcended mere craft - just listen to Roy Orbison’s signature classic, "Oh, Pretty Woman,".  The song became Roy's biggest hit and is one of the most recognized and popular songs of all time. Released in August 1964, the song hit the #1 slot in virtually every country in the world where people had record players, selling some seven million copies that year.

Roy’s songs have been performed or recorded by such diverse artists such as The Beatles, Celine Dion, U2, KD Lang, Cyndi Lauper, Credence Clearwater Revival, Linda Ronstadt, Nazareth, and The Everley Brothers just to name a few.   Several cover albums by the Roy Orbison estate have also been released showcasing original cover versions by indie artists spanning generations, countries, genres and styles.

The list of Roy Orbison songs that Casablanca represents is an extensive list of hit songs that have become part of popular culture and include:

Crying

Only The Lonely

In Dreams

Oh, Pretty Woman

Blue Bayou

Falling

Running Scared

Casablanca Media Publishing Inc. hosted a songwriters' retreat at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville Ontario. Co-sponsored by SOCAN, fifteen songwriters from Casablanca, Universal, Sony, EMI and the independent songwriting sector, collaborated over three days to create and record sixteen amazing, diverse and synch-friendly songs (listen to some of them in our Featured Audio Clips section).

In addition to the songs born out of collaborating with like-minded, talented people, the songwriters were also given the choice of writing to task for specific upcoming commercials, network television series episodes and promotions that Casablanca had received through discussions with music supervisors from the US and Canada. "The songwriters were excited that there was a sync-driven focus to the retreat", said Jana Cleland, Director of Music Publishing at Casablanca. "It really helped to fuel and focus their creativity, and as a result they wrote some really fantastic songs that will have a long life in commercials, TV and film and will also be covered by artists."

The event was wrapped by live performances, as well as some hot dancing moves, at an industry showcase in Toronto at the Gladstone Hotel. The incredible collaborations marked the beginning of some great writing teams that will be creating more future chart toppers.

I was very impressed by the debut album of Brandon Chandler and his band, The Revival, titled After All This Time. The album is a very catchy and soulful tracklist of summery tunes, like something you’d hear gracing the background at the neighborhood backyard barbecue. Chandler’s voice is reminiscent of the vocal style of Jason Mraz and Ray LaMontagne, and as a big fan of those aforementioned artists, I found Chandler and his band’s work equally appealing. He has a bluesy, feel-good vibe, paired with beautifully written lyrics and excellent guitar sound. I loved the diversity of instruments used, from guitars to pianos to organs, all mashed together into the wonderful harmony of sweet-sounding soul.

Casablanca Media Publishing Inc. is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement with Four Jays Music and Red Queen Music to administer their publishing catalogues in Canada, including the works of the legendary Harry Warren.

Harry Warren was one of America’s most prolific composers. Between 1935 and 1950, Harry Warren had 42 songs in the top ten of “Your Hit Parade” – more than any other songwriter at the time. Warren is particularly known for his success in motion-picture musicals. During the 25 year period between 1932 and 1957, he was employed by all four major studios who published 250 of his songs, with 56 of them becoming standards.

Warren wrote songs with Ira Gershwin, Mack Gordon, Johnny Mercer, Billy Rose, and Al Dubin. Among his hits included in the catalogue are "That’s Amore” (recorded by Dean Martin among others), “You Wonderful You” (recorded by Gene Kelly), “I Wanna Be A Dancin Man” (recorded by Fred Astaire), “You Got Me Where You Want Me” (recorded by Bing Crosby and Judy Garland), and “Why Can’t He Care For Me” (recorded by Connie Stevens).

“Casablanca is thrilled to represent the classic standards of Harry Warren”, said Ed Glinert, President of Casablanca Media Publishing Inc. “His body of work is incredible – he had countless hit songs during his lifetime in every type of media - radio, broadway and film. We are anxious to dig into the catalogue’s treasures and reacquaint music supervisors with these timeless standards”.

Soulful vocalist and songwriter Cassandra Wilson has been fusing jazz with blues and roots music for more than a decade. A vocalist blessed with a distinctive and flexible voice who is not afraid to take chances, Wilson has had 9 albums in the top 10 in US jazz charts over the last 10 years and has won a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal for her 1996 album New Moon Daughter. Her latest album, Thunderbirds, has been described by Billboard as “a fresh window on her music-making sensibility” and “arguably her finest”. A postmodern expression of roots music produced by the acclaimed T Bone Burnett, Thunderbirds is also another commercial success for Cassandra Wilson, and reached #2 on the Billboard Top Jazz Albums chart.

(SESAC) Ed Glinert, president of Casablanca Media Publishing, commented “Cassandra is one of the premier jazz vocalists of the last 2 decades and we are thrilled to represent her music publishing catalogue.
